Understanding Voice Technology and Screen Readers
The Text-to-Speech (TTS) feature above is a simple form of technology used by millions of visually impaired people every day, namely Screen Readers.
1. What is a Screen Reader?
A Screen Reader is assistive software that translates visual information on a computer or mobile screen into synthesized speech or Braille. This allows blind users to operate devices independently without seeing.
Examples of popular Screen Readers:
- JAWS (Job Access With Speech): Pioneer on Windows since 1989 (Paid).
- NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access): A very popular and free Open Source alternative.
- TalkBack (Android) & VoiceOver (iOS): Built-in screen readers on our smartphones.
2. How Does It Work?
Unlike humans who see a web page as a whole ("Scanning"), Screen Readers read HTML code linearly (sequentially). They jump over Semantic Elements like Headings, Lists, and Buttons.
This is why a neat website code structure is very important. If a button is just an image without a label (Alt Text), the Screen Reader will only read "Graphic 1234", which is meaningless to the blind.
3. Ethics of Interacting with the Visually Impaired
When you meet a Screen Reader user or a blind person in the real world, remember these basic ethics:
- Greet First: Gently touch the back of their hand or shoulder while mentioning your name. Don't assume they know you are there.
- Do Not Move Items: The blind rely on "spatial memory" (position memory). Moving their glass or cane just 5 cm can cause them to lose track.
- Ask Before Helping: Do not immediately pull their hand to cross the street. Ask, "Do you need help?". If yes, let them hold your elbow (not you holding them).
Want Your Website to be Screen Reader Friendly?
A website that looks good does not necessarily "sound" good in the ears of a Screen Reader robot. Semantic code errors can make your content completely unreadable.
Disabilitas.com Professional Audit Services offer direct testing by Native Screen Reader Users (Blind Testers) to ensure your website is truly inclusive.
